5 Chesterfield sofa decorating ideas

Chesterfield sofas are without a doubt, one of the most renowned types of leather sofa available. There is something special about these sofas, maybe it’s the charm that they have in abundance? Or maybe it’s the fact that when you buy one, you feel like you’re buying a piece of history.

Having stood the test of time for hundreds of years, and not once looking like going out of fashion it’s safe to say that the popularity of Chesterfield sofas is going from strength to strength. In this article, we will provide you with a number of tips for decorating around a Chesterfield.

Use cushions to accessorise and add a splash of colour to your living room

While a Chesterfield looks good both with and without cushions, it’s always nice to add them for effect. Cushions are an excellent way to add a splash of colour to your living room and add another point of interest to your sofa. The colour that you should choose all depends on the colour of your Chesterfield. For example, if you have a brown Chesterfield sofa you should opt for cushions in another colour such as white, lemon or crème.

If you want to create a bolder look, choose brightly coloured cushions in red, blue or green. If you have a tan Chesterfield sofa, you can get away with having gold cushions. The reason for this being that the tan leather colour is quite different to a gold coloured cushion. Be careful not to add too many cushions to your Chesterfield though, as doing this can hide its beauty. A nice touch is to have just one cushion placed in the middle of your Chesterfield sofa; this adds more interest without cluttering it up.

Another popular way to add cushions is to scatter 3 of them on one side of your Chesterfield, leaving the other side blank. There are literally hundreds of ways that cushions can compliment a Chesterfield, so have fun and experiment!

Create a conversational area

If you have two Chesterfield sofas, this design idea is spectacular. Place a coffee table opposite your fire place, then place two Chesterfields either side of it. The end result is a cosy conversational area where your main focal point is the fireplace. This design idea works especially well with Chesterfields, mainly because of the Grande appearance that they have. When you’re not using the coffee table, place a vase of flowers in the middle of it. This will complete the look and make you the envy of your friends and family.

Incorporate lamps and solid wooden furniture to create a classic look

When many people here the words Chesterfield sofa, they often think of a sofa in a stately home, surrounded by wooden furniture and luxury bookcases. Once great way to achieve that classic stately home look is to place a large wooden book shelf behind your sofa, then finish it off with two tall lamps either side of it.

Use your Chesterfield as a main focal point

The beauty of the Chesterfield sofa makes it a perfect focal point for any living room. As well as having a domineering appearance and an abundance of charm, Chesterfield sofas have the diversity needed to work well in a number of decor styles whether traditional or contemporary. Chesterfields make especially good focal points in large rooms that are yearning for something to break them up a little. To use your Chesterfield as a main focal point, try and position it as much in the middle of your living room as possible, this is when Chesterfields are at their best.

Place a rug in front of your Chesterfield to create a cosy focal area

Rugs work great with Chesterfield sofas, especially if you have wooden flooring. If it’s the Victorian look you’re going after, opt for a large patterned rug. This will break your living room up beautifully and create a cosy focal area for you, your friends and family to enjoy. If you want to create a contemporary look, incorporate a bold coloured rug. Something that a lot of designers are doing is placing the front two legs of Chesterfields on a rug; this is a great way to create a cosy living section.
